When my husband and I decided to have children, we knew that we would love them to the moon and back. We knew that we would teach and encourage them. What we did not know was what our kids would do for us. We had no idea that they would teach us, encourage us, push us, and help us fulfill our purpose in life. Today, I am a testament that children really can move you into your purpose.
A few years ago, we started to teach our kids that anything is possible if you put forth the effort. It’s not every day that kids are surrounded by role models who bring them to that conclusion on their own. My husband and I came up with a bright idea. We decided to set a goal and achieve it as a family. We put everything on the table right there in front of the kids. No hidden agendas just set and achieve a goal. Our goal was to publish a children’s book.
The moment our goal was chosen, our whole plan turned upside down.
It was not an easy endeavor. I learned so much about who we are and how to work as a family unit. The kids held us accountable at every turn and every crossroad. Whether it was the difficulty in finding an illustrator or trying to carve time to work after a 9 to 5 or simply agreeing to disagree, we held it together. Frankly, the kids had A LOT to do with that. Each one of us was either fired or resigned from the project at least once. Saniyah was fired when she accidentally spilled juice on page 4, “you’re fired”. After the 125th time asking “Can we publish the book yet?” and getting a resounding “no” every single time, Robert promptly resigned. Jay and I fired each other weekly depending on what day of the week it was. Sometimes it is easy to quit when you do not see an immediate return, but when we looked at our kids, we couldn’t quit. Quitting is the very thing we set out to teach them not to do. We are not hypocrites. The kids held us accountable by simply being present.
My husband published our first ever children’s book entitled “ALL PLAY? (Not Today!)” available on Amazon.com. The book is based on our children and is the first in the series. It is, by far, the coolest thing we have ever done as a family. As you can imagine, our family has many memories, experiences and simple “Oh My” moments that make for perfect writing materials.
Our only objective is to deliver a wholesome, heart-warming story which teaches life lessons along the way. It is our hope that we provide tools to help parents and teachers instill the values that my grandmother would teach. Things like the importance of appreciating parents, speaking with confidence and the power of encouraging yourself.
We set out to teach our kids that anything is possible, but instead our kids ended up teaching us, holding us accountable, showing us how to truly stand on faith, and to never quit. We actually achieved our goal and now are moving more in our purpose. So, your children really can give you purpose if you open yourself up to it.
